‘Aqeedah (Belief)

ʿaqīdah, plural عقائد ʿaqāʾid, also rendered ʿaqīda, aqeeda etc.) is an Islamic term meaning “creed”. “Aqeedah…First…If They But Knew” That is the manner in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought up his companions: Iman first and then the Quran. The qur’an

If you equated Islam as a journey through the darkness then, the Qur’an is the light that leads you. It is the One Book in which there is NO doubt. We must strive to learn all we can as Allah commands, in His Book: ” Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists).”

What is Islam?

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say:

Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.

This hadith focuses on the five pillars of Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) describes the foundations of Islam as having been “built upon five.” These foundational actions are either of the tongue, heart or otherwise.

Imagine a home above the ocean, with five pillars that reach to the ground to support the home above. That is the imagery that comes to mind when the Prophet (peace be upon him) talks about these five aspects upon which Islam is built.

  • Testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah

  • Making the 5 obligatory prayers, every day

  • Giving charity

  • Ramadhan - each year ~ Hajj - once in your lifetime, and both only if you are able
